This study was conducted to observe the teratogenic effects of alcohol on the development of skeleton of Sprague-Dawley(SD) rat fetuses. Rats were exposed to alcohol at a dose of 3g/kg(259o) during whole gestation periods and gestational day 6 to 15 by p.o divided into two doses. Litters were sacrificed after birth and examined for gross skeletal malformation using cartilage and bone staining. Results showed that ethanol exposed litters during whole gestation period had a percentage of skeletal malformation(41.4%), gestational day 6 to 15 day(24.6%), control group(0%) respectively. It was concluded that ethanol exposure in pregnant rat could induce skeletal malformation of fetus.
